Requierements and Conditions
What are the requirements for studying in Turkey?
You must attend the YÖS examination of individual universities in order to study in Turkey. YÖS examinations of selected universities are valid at several universities.
The YÖS exam at Istanbul University is valid at almost every university in Turkey.
Students should have spent at least 3 years of their last education outside Turkey and Northern Cyprus.
Meaning: their last 3 annual certificates or degrees must be obtained outside of Turkey.
You may be a Turkish citizen, but you may not have obtained a high school degree in Turkey. At least 3 years outside of Turkey have continued their school.
Dual citizens may also take the YÖS exam and start studying in Turkey.
All other citizenships are also allowed in the YÖS exam.
You must either have a higher education entrance qualification or a degree equivalent to the Lise degree.
If you do not have a Baccalaureate (Matura) or equivalent, you may also have an Acik-lise-diplomasi (Turkish High School of Turkan University).

What are the prerequisites for studying in Turkey?

YÖS Examination: Prospective students are typically required to take the YÖS (Yabancı Öğrenci Sınavı) examination administered by individual universities. Some universities accept the YÖS scores from other institutions, with Istanbul University’s exam recognized by many across the country.
Educational Background: Applicants must have completed at least the last three years of their education outside Turkey or Northern Cyprus. This means their most recent certificates or degrees should be obtained from institutions outside Turkey. Even Turkish citizens who haven’t obtained a high school degree in Turkey must have spent a minimum of three years studying outside the country. Dual citizens are also eligible to take the YÖS exam and enroll in Turkish universities. Additionally, students must possess either a higher education entrance qualification or a diploma equivalent to the Turkish Lise degree.
Alternative Qualifications: Those without a Baccalaureate (Matura) or equivalent may opt for an Acik-lise-diplomasi (Turkish High School Diploma) from Turkan University.

In terms of duration, Bachelor’s programs in Turkey typically follow a standard period of study of four years, with exceptions such as Dentistry (5 years), Human Medicine (6 years), Veterinary Medicine (5 years), and Law (4 years). Engineering programs also generally span four years.
Language
Language proficiency is a common concern among international students in Turkey, but many universities offer bilingual curricula to address this issue. In Turkey, Turkish is typically the primary scientific language, followed by English as the secondary language. Additionally, some universities also offer courses in German or French as scientific languages.
For students requiring additional language preparation, some institutions may mandate a language preparation year, known as “hazırlık yılı” in Turkish. However, this requirement can often be bypassed if students pass language exams in the second language.
Students who successfully pass language proficiency exams for their non-native language or whose language of instruction is not Turkish can also skip the language preparation year. This proficiency exam ensures that students are adequately prepared to engage with the curriculum without the need for additional language training.
While some students may need to undergo language preparation, many will find that they can bypass this requirement through proficiency exams or by fulfilling language criteria specific to their desired programs and universities.
Application to Turkish universities
